Their purpose

Common Ground is a First Nations not-for-profit and collective of First Nations people changing systems through storytelling.

Probem they solve

Colonial narratives have shaped Australia since 1788, ignoring true history and marginalising First Nations voices. Systems like government, education, and healthcare are built on these narratives, perpetuating inequality. Changing these systems requires reimagining the narratives and mindsets that uphold them.

What they do

Storytelling is the thread that weaves First Nations people with their Old People, Ancestors, Country and kin. Storytelling is also a proven way to shift pervasive and harmful narratives, change behaviours and mobilise people to take action.Common Ground builds on existing community power to strengthen the stories, so they can reimagine stronger futures. Futures that are grounded in reciprocity, justice and truth-telling.

Their impact

Common Ground amplify diverse lived experiences, creating spaces for storytelling grounded in reciprocity. They strengthen the storytelling ecosystem by empowering First Nations storytellers and facilitating pathways for entry. Educating and building accountability, they shift mindsets from apathy to action, advocating for justice and embedding First Nations knowledge in systems.

A few things we love

Dreamy

Dreamy is a collection of mindful audio stories from the First Storytellers – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. These stories bring an age-old practice of oral storytelling into the digital space, helping people slow down and connect to Country. These stories are freely available for streaming along with accompanying learning kits to help you connect with them more deeply.

First Nations Bedtime Stories

First Nations Bedtime Stories is an annual event bringing Dreaming stories to homes and classrooms nationwide. Every year, Common Ground collaborates with different First Nations creators, to film five stories shared online over five days. This campaign welcomes people of all ages, fostering connection and understanding of First Nations cultures.
